Nicholas Kofi Anderson
West Nigeria Christian College
by Biodun Owolabi
The charge to commit the saving gospel of Christ to faithful men who will, in turn, teach others (2 Tim. 2: 2) came to realization in the life and ministry of Nicholas Kofi Anderson, a 2004 graduate of West Nigeria Christian College & School Biblical Studies, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Kofi came from the Central Region of Ghana. He enrolled in the Diploma in Biblical Studies Program in 2002. After graduating in 2004, he returned home to start a new congregation in his home town.
While nurturing this young congregation, Bro. Kofi discovered the need to extend his ministry beyond congregational ministry. He noticed that, after completing government-sponsored junior secondary schools, most pupils within the community have no means of entering the senior secondary level because their parents could not afford the fees. This situation created a lot of social problems; many young girls got pregnant, and the boys became troublemakers in the community. The idea of providing an opportunity for these indigent students to further their education at an affordable cost in a Christian environment led to the establishment of Church of Christ Senior Secondary School by Bro. Nicholas Kofi Anderson.
Bro. Kofi put his entrepreneurial skills to task and used all
resources at his disposal to recruit teachers, procure classroom and office furniture and secure a community centre for the school. In spite of obvious challenges of starting a new venture, the school project survived and celebrated its first anniversary on Saturday, 26th September, 2009. The enrollment is now 220 students in both day and boarding facilities.
Although its curriculum is basically secular, the school provides a Christian environment, incorporates Bible into its curriculum, and operates devotions and daily chapel services which are characteristics of Christian schools. The school’s motto best encapsulates the institution’s protocol: “Training with Christian Wisdom.” So far, many of the students have been baptized, added to the Lord’s Body and worships in the campus church where Bro. Anderson is the minister.
The first anniversary celebration gave me the opportunity to the project first-hand. Apart from being the guest of honor, I was equally humbled and surprised to discover that one of the buildings was named after me. The anniversary celebration afforded brethren and friends of the school to see how God is using brother Kofi to bless his community. Elders and church leaders from across Ghana and a representative of Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. J. S. Annan, all converged to
celebrate hard work, bravery, excellence, sacrifice, service, faith and perseverance – all virtues that the life of Nicholas Kofi Anderson exemplifies. The ceremony was also used to present awards to different categories of students who have distinguished themselves in learning and character. The maiden edition of the school magazine was also launched at the ceremony.
In this school project, Kofi brings into fruition a saying credited to Colin Power: “If you are going to achieve excellence in big things, you must develop the habit in little matters. Excellence is not an exception; it is a prevailing attitude.” Kofi has a prevailing attitude to extend the frontiers of the Lord’s kingdom. Within one year, he had the foresight to pool resources and mortgages together to start the construction of the permanent site of the school. WNCC is indeed very proud to be associated with the spiritual exploits of Bro. Kofi Anderson – a very distinguished alumnus!
